MALGUDI DAYS- BOOK REVIEW BY MARIYA SIBY

Malgudi Days is a collection of short stories by R K NARAYANAN published in 1944

Through the collection of 19 stories, R K Naraanan's Book Malgudi days portrays a facet of life in Malgudi. The characters have a timeless appeal and these stories tend to stay with the reader long after having closed the book the stories revolve around the central character, Swaminathan better known as a swami to his friends and family

Through Swami the author portrays the growth of a 10-year-old boy, who do not want to go to school and also makes many excuses for not attending the school. he spends his days by roaming around the villages of Malgudi, playing cricket etc.his father was a govt servant and mother was a housewife

Like most of the students, Swami shares his adventures with his friends . his friends were Mani and Rajan a rich kid son of a police officer. circumstances made Swami unfit to any school. In Malgudi life changes dramatically for young Swami when Rajan joins the school and becomes his close friend The story narrates Swami's experiences with his parents, grandmother, friends, residents of Malgudi and even with his newborn brother.

The greatest feat of swami and his friends lies in putting together a cricket team for the MCC and challenging the neighbouring young men's union to a match . Just before the match, however, things go horribly and Swami had no option but to run away from home, wanting never to return to Malgudi again...

The short stories in this collection include ''SWAMI AND FRIENDS'','' VENDOR OF SWEETS'',  ''THE UNDELIVERED MAIL'', 'A HERO', etc
